I'm looking at bulking out my first aid kit with stuff that goes just beyond the normal first aid stuff, like scalpels etc. Apart from doing a few first aid courses (currently expired), I don't have any medical knowledge. Can you recommend any books and equipment to cover some of the extras that I might be faced with (like what you mentioned above). I've got general first aid books etc but I'd like to have some backup if I can't get to the hospital.
OK, what you are talking about as extra's is a full Trauma kit!
www.surgicalinstruments.net.au/
www.medione.com.au/
www.medshop.com.au/
So you will need:
Sphygmomanometer: For blood pressure
Stethoscope: to be able to take blood pressure and listen to lungs and body sounds
Tourniquet: to stem flow of blood on arms or leg's and to aid in giving or taking blood
Defibrillator: to be able to shock the heart in to normal rhythm during a heart attack
Thermometer: for taking temperature
Ophthalmoscope: Instrument to look into the eye (Handy but not necessary)
Otoscope: Instrument to look in the ear
Laryngoscope: Instrument to look down and aid for Airways tubes
Manual Resuscitator Set: To pump air into lungs (Takes over from Mouth to Mouth breathing)
Basic Dressing Pack for Sterile wound cleaning: these are disposable, but you can sterilize them for reuse
Pressure canner: to use to sterilize medical instruments and bandages. You can use chemicals, Alcohol Etc, but a pressure canner will sterilize bandages and glass where chemicals may damage them.(and cook food...LOL)
Scalpel Blades: No; 6,10,12
Scalpel handles: to hold blades
Forceps: Artery and Hemostatic curved and straight: to clamp off bleeds and use to suture. min 6, 4 curved and 2 straight (12 is better, 8 & 4)
Forceps: Rat tooth, to hold skin in place for suturing or debribing(cut away dead skin/flesh)
Scissors: operating: curved and straight
Scissors: general purpose
Suture needles and pre packaged Sutures: To close wounds(You will need both dissolvable or non-dissolvable sutures )
Oral/Nasal Tracheal Tube: Tube to allow air into lungs, used in injuries and surgery
IV Cannula sets: To be able to give IV Solutions and drugs: Child and Adult sizes + assorted tubing
IV Solutions: 0.9% 500mls and 1lt bags
Needles & Syringes: Syringes, Insulin syringes with needles, 1ml, 2ml, 5ml, 10 & 20ml, Needles, 16, 21,26
Local anaesthetic: To numb an area to suture
Antibiotics and other useable medication
Sterile gloves & Maskes
Assorted bandages and dressings and gauze & Tapes
Antiseptics and Antibacterial solutions
Now before anyone panics... This is not a complete list, but what you would find in an out back Trauma/FAK for use by the FDS (Flying Dr Service) and people can be instructed what to do via radio... But WTSHTF you will need to be able to do this maybe with out help!
Finding good medical/surgical books to put in your library is essential as is food and supplies.
Amazon is the best place to find medical books and I have previously have posted a list of free online PDF books, like where there is no Dr and where there is no dentist.

Just a few titles...
Don't rely on Computers or the internet or other electronic items in case they go down or are controlled. (A Faraday Cage for backup would not go astray)
You can find most things you need: www.medshop.com.au/ or similar stores online in Australia
This post was a bit rushed, but I will add more as I find out what else people need! Hope this has helped and not put you off!!!
